About

FBI Special Agent Maegan Rees presented electronic records for the prosecution on Day 17 and Day 18, identifying Keith Raniere as the WhatsApp user Unknown Caller after reviewing approximately 1,500 pages of messages. She used relationship-duration references to estimate a starting point in late 2005 or early 2006; a separate email referring to 30 full moons together led her to approximately September 2005. These dates were calculations from the communications, not firsthand observations.

During direct examination by Tanya Hajjar, Rees read messages concerning secrecy, sexual conditions, weight-loss demands, fasting and bulimia. The communications included Camila's expressions of affection and commitment as well as objections, fear and distress. Rees also reviewed obedience vows, reporting requirements, recruitment and collateral documents describing financial and personal consequences. She confirmed that witness lines on a displayed breach document were blank; the testimony did not establish that signing, witnessing and notarization had occurred. On Day 18, she read Cami's November 4, 2016 email describing an assigned seduction task and consequences for disobedience.

Rees also compared furnishings in photographs and video images and reviewed medical records describing appendix surgery and subsequent abscess treatment. She described visual similarities without making an unqualified identification of the location. In discussing photographed scarring, she acknowledged that she was not a medical examiner and corrected an initial right-leg identification to the left leg after the court intervened.

On cross-examination, Marc Agnifilo questioned the protection and provenance of exported WhatsApp chats. Rees agreed that exported chats no longer retained WhatsApp encryption and acknowledged limits to her knowledge of searches of Raniere's email. On redirect, she confirmed reviewing separate messages from Raniere's Yahoo account and similar chats in both his account and Camila's account.
