James Loperfido concluded his testimony, and FBI Agent Maegan Rees reviewed Camila’s communications concerning sexual conditions, weight demands, obedience and collateral. The court addressed objections to the messages and images, allowing contextual statements while leaving some issues for individual review.

Full day summary

James Loperfido concluded his testimony after acknowledging limited contact with Keith Raniere and reliance on others for information about a commodities investment. He said his own work concerned the tax consequences of the loss, not the trade. He also described Kathy Russell deferring decisions until she consulted Raniere. Loperfido recalled daily pressure to become more involved in NXIVM but denied threats, could not recall an explicit warning that refusing classes would end his work, and said he did not know why his work ended. FBI Special Agent Maegan Rees then reviewed Camila’s electronic communications. After examining approximately 1,500 pages of messages, she identified the WhatsApp user Unknown Caller as Raniere. Relationship-duration references led her to estimate a start in late 2005 or early 2006; a separate reference to 30 full moons led her to approximately September 2005. These were calculations from communications, not firsthand observations. Messages read to the jury concerned sexual conditions, secrecy, weight-loss demands, fasting, bulimia, permission requests, schedule reporting and obedience. Camila expressed affection and commitment alongside objections and fear. Rees described collateral documents addressing employment, relationships with children, property and financial consequences totaling $1 million. Witness lines on the displayed breach document were blank. Other messages described branding and a secret organization under Raniere’s ultimate command. The court allowed Camila’s statements when necessary to understand Raniere’s responses and invited a proposed limiting instruction. It requested individual review of statements lacking that contextual connection; the objection to unanswered Exhibit 1701 remained unresolved in the exchange. The court deferred a ruling on wrist-injury photographs, allowed ultrasound and pregnancy-test materials, and later permitted a general description of a graphic image while prohibiting its display to the jury. Rees’s examination remained unfinished when court suspended for the night.

5. Maegan Rees — Direct (Part 2)

FBI Agent Maegan Rees continued reviewing Camila’s messages and collateral documents. The court admitted email exhibits and restricted display of a graphic image before technical problems preceded the night’s suspension.

  1. Objection to Testimony Describing a Graphic ImageDefense counsel objected to a witness describing a graphic image, while the prosecutor argued it showed an early BDSM component in the relationship.
  2. Discussion of Image Sent to CamilaThe prosecutor argued that an image the defendant sent to Camila was probative in light of Nicole’s anticipated testimony and Lauren Salzman’s identification of Camila.
