Sylvie testified for the prosecution that fear of collateral release led her to comply with unwanted sexual assignments involving Keith Raniere. Under cross-examination, she acknowledged affectionate messages and the absence of direct threats to release her collateral, but maintained that DOS obligations shaped her conduct.
Sylvie
Former DOS member identified in court by first name only.
About
Sylvie testified for the prosecution on Day 1 and Day 2 about NXIVM's hierarchy, her dependence on its leaders, and her participation in DOS. She described entering NXIVM through employment with Clare Bronfman and advancing to Three Stripe Coach. Her account connected rank-based rituals and teachings about victimhood with fear of being labeled suppressive and growing distrust of her own judgment.
On direct examination, Sylvie said Monica Duran obtained a damaging letter and nude photographs before revealing the Master/Slave project. She described escalating collateral, readiness drills, and assignments to seduce Raniere and send explicit photographs. She testified that an unwanted oral-sex encounter at the Flintlock Drive house followed Monica's direction to meet him, and that she understood compliance as a command backed by possible release of collateral. She also acknowledged recruiting Samantha and Regina and obtaining collateral at Monica's direction, while denying that she assigned either woman to seduce Raniere. Her own branding never occurred.
Agnifilo challenged that account through affectionate messages, requests to meet Raniere, praise for NXIVM programs, and Bronfman's financial assistance. Sylvie acknowledged positive experiences, choosing to remain, and Raniere allowing her to stop sending photographs. She agreed that neither Monica nor Raniere directly threatened to release her collateral and that nobody released it. She nevertheless maintained that contact and expressions of appreciation were expected and that she understood disobedience could lead to release. Messages also exposed uncertainty in her remembered chronology.
On redirect, Sylvie explained schedule-sharing as availability to her DOS master, but was unsure whether sharing her location had been required. She interpreted another message as seeking permission for intimacy with her husband and described feeling that Raniere had claimed ownership over her. She acknowledged deleting her own messages; on recross, she confirmed doing so despite remembering his instruction not to delete them. The court then excused her. During direct examination, she had also disclosed a recently signed immunity letter, saying she had not expected immunity when first meeting the government.
At sentencing, the court excluded alleged trafficking involving Sylvie from its Guidelines calculation because the government had not established those allegations by a preponderance of the evidence.
