Kathy Russell was discussed in testimony about NXIVM accounting, Daniela's unlawful border crossing, and the installation of surveillance software on James Loperfido's laptop.
Kathy Russell
Member of NXIVM's accounting staff.
About
Daniela described Kathy Russell as a NXIVM accountant and member of Raniere's inner circle. She testified that Russell helped execute a plan devised by Raniere to install surveillance software on James Loperfido's laptop: Russell arranged an appointment, signaled Daniela, and took Loperfido away from his computer while Daniela installed the software. Loperfido separately testified that Russell deferred task-force decisions until she consulted Raniere. Under defense questioning, he praised her thorough accounting work and excellent working papers but declined to endorse her honesty.
Daniela also testified that Russell met her in Canada in December 2004, supplied false identification, and accompanied her into the United States under a plan she attributed to Raniere. She described sexual encounters involving Russell and Raniere and said that Russell's help with the crossing contributed to her feeling indebted during one encounter, while acknowledging that no explicit connection or directive had been made. On cross-examination, Daniela reaffirmed receiving the false identification from Russell and deliberately distracting the border agent, but could not remember whether Kristin Keeffe joined the return trip. FBI agent Michael Weniger later distinguished Russell's credit-card records indicating travel toward the border from an official crossing record, which he did not have for her.
