About
Kristin Keeffe gave a victim-impact statement at Raniere's sentencing, describing abuse, fleeing with her son, and unsuccessful child-support negotiations. Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis asked about the attorneys involved, and Marc Agnifilo agreed to elaborate. In the later sentencing discussion, the judge questioned the absence of support and rejected counsel's explanation based on Keeffe's hiding from Raniere. No child-support order followed those exchanges.
During trial, Keeffe's dealings with investigators became part of a dispute over financial dossiers and email collections. The defense argued that Canaprobe supplied fraudulent information, that Keeffe largely acted independently, and that she should testify to explain the documents. The government argued that the materials showed the alleged enterprise's targeting and communication practices, regardless of whether the banking information was accurate. The court agreed to review the materials but made no final admissibility ruling in that exchange.
FBI Special Agent Michael Weniger later traced Canaprobe requests and verification efforts involving Keeffe. He believed most or all of Canaprobe's information was untrue, while expressing uncertainty, and said participants appeared to seek real banking information and believe what they received. On cross-examination, he would not attribute most of the recovered document box or its handwritten notes to Keeffe. On redirect, he said correspondence appeared to show her conveying Canaprobe information to Raniere and described Raniere as the person approached for permission by the legal department, including Keeffe as legal liaison.
Keeffe's correspondence also figured in testimony about Daniela's identification documents. Lauren Salzman said Keeffe drafted a message that Raniere and Salzman reviewed before Daniela's father sent it on behalf of the family. It demanded lengthy book reports and a return to Clifton Park while refusing Daniela's requested documents. The court admitted the February 29, 2012 email chain without objection.
